My Oma - Grandmother
Today is the anniversary of the death of my incredible Oma Mrs Clemi Sinason and I think I have to make todays blog about her as she was the epic of a lifestyle if there’s a will there’s a way and that you can go through the upmost sorrows and tribulations and still stand tall .
Oma was born in Czechoslovakia as an only child to her father Avraham and mother Chaya ,
At a young age her family when her parents realised the Nazis were close they smuggled her to Hungary to family to be safe but alas Budapest was conquered and Oma was taken to Auschwitz .
In the camp she worked and laboured until one day she was sent to the death queue but suddenly standing there in the group destined to die she had a change of will and she ran across to the group selected to continue living and for some reason no one challenged her .
Oma survived the camps even when she met by chance her own mother who was sent there too and where she learnt her father had died when he discovered that his only daughter had been sent to the camps .
In extreme illness and weakness she was pulled out and cared for when the camp was liberated and due to her mothers incapability to take care off her was sent to London to an Aunt , her Mother moved to Israel to Tel Aviv and as a six year old child I met her my great grandmother , an experience seared forever in my brain .
My Grandmother came to London not speaking a word of English , yet Taught herself the Language , went to Gateshead Jewish collage got herself a teaching degree and after marrying my Grandfather who had come from Germany in the Kinder transport started teaching in a school , Thousands of Students passed by my Grandmothers lessons all saying how much strength and inspiration they got from my Grandmother .
Rabbi YY Rubenstein was once asked in a BBC interview who his hero is , his answer was my Grandmother .
Although she was busy teaching she always had time for her grandchildren with high tea every Sunday or just helping us with our schoolwork , weekends when we had turns eating with her was a highlight with her delicious food and attention to hearing what we were up to and every weekend we got a bag full of her leftovers and would fight over the food .
Not only did she take care of her children and Grandchildren and students but countless members of the community received cakes, salads etc. as Oma knew they needed that extra comfort in that specific time.
A couple of years ago Oma had a stroke and became ill and 3 years ago today she passed away leaving a legacy of tens of Grandchildren, great grandchildren and thousands of Students .
Taking the ultimate revenge on the Nazis
She survived and never let her dark past destroy her .
I miss you Oma and know that your legacy stands forever .
