Elections FOMO
Today I have been home avidly following the Israeli elections. It's strange being at home as I usualy am outside campaigning and convincing people to vote, soaking up the vibes of the elections.
Unfortunatly, I can't afford the flight back to Israel this time, so I'm home in Manchester.
Seeing the messages and countless pictures of the voting gives me FOMO (fear of missing out)!
I love my country so much and love my political party Meretz so much.
I put posts up on my social media asking people to vote and am just chilling and praying for a good outcome.
Yesterday, I spoke to my parents who moved to Israel, who both are not allowed to vote as they came on a visa to Israel due to my father being Dutch and thus he can't have a second citizenship. My father is so impressed with the goings on: "It's like a festival!" he said to me.
Yes, Israeli elections are holidays and the streets and campains are crazy but unfortunately there are also incidents of cheating, swindling, coercian and other things which try to deter people from voting.
My friend, Jeremy Marlow, from National Jewish Assembly said that "there are 193 countries registered with the United Nations of which only 77 of them have democratic elections, with more than one candidate on the ballot.
This includes countries like Russia who do not allow any candidate on the ballot slip if they have a chance of coming close to Putin.
Think about that - just over a third of the countries are democratic with free genuine general elections - that’s all.
Let NO ONE tell you Israel is undemocratic or if you don't vote today, Israel will become undemocratic. We have one of the most liberal democracies in the world and 40 parties have registered so YOU have a wide choice today.
There are left, right, far-left, far-right, religious, secular, Arab, Jewish and all sorts of one policy platforms running.
I don’t have hopes. I stand by the democratic process and what the people say, provided it is all honest and fair.
We must respect the results and respect each other. "
That is what is important: respecting the democratic process and its results.
Those that have not voted, go out now and vote!
